Before you apply
- Found my highway authority (county council in two-tier areas)
- Measured the parking space depth (most councils: 4.8 to 5 m) and width (about 2.4 to 2.7 m)
- Measured the distance to the nearest junction (often 10 to 15 m minimum)
- Checked for trees, lamp posts, signs, drains and utility covers
- Checked whether my road is classified (A, B or C)
- Checked for a conservation area or listed building
- Planned a permeable driveway, or one that drains into the garden
- Got planning permission, or written confirmation I don't need it
- Got the owner's or landlord's written permission (if I rent)
- Checked deeds or covenants allow parking (BCP and Harlow mention this)
The application
- Photos of the frontage, including neighbouring properties
- Measured sketch or plan
- Fee ready, and I know whether it's refundable
- Noted the decision timescale and how long permission lasts
If I'm using my own contractor
- At least three written quotes
- Seen operative and supervisor street works (SWQR) cards
- Seen insurance meeting the council's minimum (£2m to £10m, depending on the council)
- Contractor will get the licence or permit before digging
- Agreed who fixes defects during the maintenance period (often 2 years)
After the work
- Council final inspection done
- Kept the approval letter and completion certificate
- Considered access protection (H-bar) markings, e.g. £259 in Cambridgeshire
