Dropped Kerb Guide

Can I get a dropped kerb? Check your drive in 2 minutes

Check your drive in 2 minutes

1. How deep is the space where you'd park, from the pavement to the house (or wall or bay window)?
2. How far is the drive from the nearest road junction?
3. Is there a tree, lamp post, sign, drain or utility cover where the dropped kerb would go?
4. Is your road a classified road (an A, B or C road)?
5. Is your home in a conservation area?
6. Is the property a flat, maisonette or business (not a house)?
7. Is it a listed building?
8. Will the new driveway be solid (non-porous) and over 5 m², without draining into the garden?

How the checker decides

It uses rules published by the councils we've checked: minimum parking depths (4 m to 6 m), distances from junctions (10 m to 15 m), obstacles, and the planning permission triggers in England's permitted development rules. Your council makes the actual decision after a site visit. See the full dropped kerb rules.
